Visually powerful, high quality and eye-catching labels are essential in a competitive market. Creating the perfect label takes time, strategic planning and creativity. Some things to consider when printing labels are design, artwork and material. In this blog post, we discuss label materials.
Why is choosing the right material important? Surfaces vary in shape, if you are looking for a labelling solution for jars with irregular angles or a container with slippery or rough materials, choosing the correct label material is even more essential.
Here’s an example of how label material choices go wrong. You are wishing to save money on labels so you decide to go with a lower cost label material choice, such as paper. However, your product labels are exposed to humidity in some way. This will affect the labels; inks may smear, labels may peel off and your label printing efforts will be wasted and more costly in the long run. In this case it would have been better to go with polyester or vinyl labels which are waterproof and durable.
So, how do you decide which label material to use?
Below is a brief introduction to some popular materials used for label printing.
Paper (Plain, no gloss)
Ideal for household labelling, labelling children's stationery et cetera. Avoid if the environment is moist as this material is not waterproof, also not suitable if you are wanting a high end/sophisticated look.
Paper (Plain, semi-gloss)
Unlike plain paper, no gloss (as above), this material is not entirely matte, there is some gloss, adding a bit of elegance.
Glossy plain paper
Sometimes used in commercial environments, the gloss adds an appearance of sophistication and elegance. It also adds protection, making them more durable and suitable for harsher conditions such as freezers etc.
Vinyl is more durable and long lasting, frequently utilised in environments that are humid or where the label will be exposed to water. This material gives off an impression of sophistication, class and elegance. Popular for wine bottle labels and champagne bottle labels.
Perfect for luxury brands, this material gives an appearance of high quality merchandise and retail goods. An ideal material if you are wanting your label to stand out in a unique way. A popular go-to material for prestigious packaging and product labelling.
An incredibly durable material option, resin dome offers a 3D effect, often used in technological, automotive and electrical industries. This material can withstand the harshest weather conditions.
A popular material used in a range of industries, known for its versatility and durability. It is able to withstand exposure to chemicals, moisture and water. Another benefit of this material is it is odourless and non-toxic. Perfect for: retail labels, barcodes, industrial labelling and more.
